How to read this taxonomy
Every entry is written in two registers, kept distinct on purpose:
- Metaphorical — figurative language is allowed, but each metaphor is grounded (what it actually refers to mechanically) and bounded (where it stops being literally true).
- Operational — what the mechanism does, stated plainly, with both what is known and what is not yet known declared in the same breath. No claim is asserted at a confidence it hasn’t earned.
Each entry carries an epistemic status:
- [Established] — reproducible at the behavioral level; demonstrated across the proof corpus.
- [Hypothesis] — coherent, grounded in observation, framed to be falsifiable, not yet verified.
- [Open] — a question the discipline has named but not answered.
The taxonomy describes a real property of current frontier models and a discipline built on it. It does not claim omniscience for any session, and it does not assert mechanism where only behavior has been observed.

Every entry is in the calibrated two-register voice with epistemic status declared. The remaining lab detail extends from this spine one entry at a time, each mined from its article and added without diluting what’s here.
Audit complete: all cross-references resolve, Parts I–XI and the glossary are internally consistent, every entry carries a calibrated status tag, and no retired claim survives anywhere in the document. The draft is internally clean and ready for depth review.
